Prayer Walking in Tepoztlan
Pronounced (Tay-post-lan) seen here from the ruins called El Tepozteco, which sit atop the mountian that serves as a backdrop for the city. Down below is the oldest Monastery in Mexico and a town filled with a variety of religions including witchcraft, mysticism and an influence of many different eastern religions.
When we were here a year ago, we parked are car and began the hike through the colonial town to get to the base of the mountain so we could climb a couple thousand feet to the ruins. Many people believe the ruins were built atop the mountain because of special mystical powers associated with this area. As we walked through the town, we were given pamphlets and brochures by many of these different religions. None of them Christian.
It is our understanding that there are some missions started here, but none have their own building. Many of the worshippers gather in homes and go about it secretively out of fear of experiencing repurcussions or influences by members of the occult. Our job today, pray for this town and what God is doing and would like to do here. There are many tourists here and it is quite quaint. Nonetheless, there is a spiritual sense that, "anything goes."
Here are some picks of the hike up (didn't catch the prayer walk on film, though). And of course, the ruins on top of the mountain, it's actually a small pyramid.
